Hibernation

Yes,  I know.

I have been quiet for a while now.

The energy that I needed to paint wasn't there anymore in the evening hours after work.

But that's a thing of the past.   I joined the retired squad since june this year.

I have already painted 10 times more in 3 months than I did in the first half of the year.  It feels like coming out of hibernation.

And it feels good!

What's on my agenda in the following months?

Paint for sure.  But there are also the grandkids.  And my mum, who needs more care.

Anyway, we are preparing for that amazing event Fabriano In Acquarello.   As a countryleader for Belgium, it's my job to motivate people to join the event.  To bring together a group of good painters to represent the country.

The convention gets better every year, with a showcase of very good watercolorists.

I have already booked my accomodation!  And hope to see a lot of familiar faces.

That's for April.

In May, I plan to go to the International Watercolour Masters in the UK.   I had no good work to send in for the competition, due to what I explained in the beginning.   Hopefully next time!

Amazing times to come!  This new chapter in my life had a good begin!

It's something we all experience : there is a first time for everything!

Since a couple of years I am a big fan of Daniel Smith paints.  I love the consistency of the paints, they really work for me.  John Cogley (CEO) en Katherine Taylor (president, sales) are really caring for artists, whether you are what they call a "master" or just beginning to explore painting.  It's showing in their presence at a lot of events all over the world!  One of these events is Fabriano In Acquarello in Italy.  There I met them for the first time.

I even had the pleasure to be in Seattle and getting a tour through a part of the old factory with John Cogley himself.  For me, a small (in experience) watercolorist that was awesome!

Katherine Taylor asked - actually begged - me since a few years if I was open to do a live zoom demo at the weekly demos on friday, where they invite every week another artist.    That was quite a big honor to me, but I just "freezed" by the thought only!

But this year, I took on my naughty shoes, and told them I am - maybe - ready.

So three weeks ago, Ethel reached out to me, if I was willing to do a demo.   I thought by myself  "I can't backoff now" and "you should be brave".  Because that can be a real push up for my artwork.  I love painting and do this mainly because I love it, but support is a great motivation.

It took me a week to find a set up I liked, I contacted my friends Lyn Evans (UK) and Lorena Massa (IT) for help and advice, and then there was the day.  I planned to do a demo of a portrait I already did before.  To be on the safe side.  Although I did the portrait subject already before, I always find myself  painting portraits with another approach sometimes.  You can call it lack of experience or knowledge but like I do most paintings I am just following my feeling.

And then there was D-day....

My very first live zoom demo......

There was a bit of nervousness on my part before it took place.

Took a book to read in the afternoon, but couldn't really concentrate.

An hour before, I made the connection, to be sure everything was allright on the technical side.  Seeing already a few familiar faces made me calm.  Though when I see the demo in replay, I notice my nervosity still!  It's awkward to hear my own voice too.

The link to see the demo : https://danielsmith.com/artists/chat-with-agnes-geets-belgium/

From what I heard it went well and I got lot of lovely comments afterwards.  And me, myself, am very pleased with the result, even regarding the time in with I painted this portrait.   Maybe I need deadlines to work faster and looser, which usually favors my work!

My thanks go out to John, Katherine, Ethel, and the whole team at Daniel Smith Art Materials for their big support to artists all over the world!

Mijn allereerste live zoom demo......

Fabriano in Acquarello 2022 - Bologna

(English)                         (Nederlands onderaan)

Fabriano in Acquarello. A fact that recurs every year. This year from May 12th to May 15th and for the first time in Bologna, after having taken place online twice.

Full of expectation, I took the plane in Charleroi on May 10th, not quite sure how it would be after those two corona years and in a city strange to me that I never visited before. Arriving in Bologna I took the Marconi Express which took me to the station in Bologna in a few minutes. From there it was a ten minute walk to my hotel.

I chose not to stay in one of the hotels suggested by the organization, but chose to be closer to the center. Knowing that the event went on from morning until evening (quite late), was about 8 kms far and I didn't know whether I wanted to spend three full days in such an event center.

The first day, the day before the event, I had no company yet and decided to visit San Luca, a basilica on the hill. Very beautiful, but also exhausting! The heat probably also played a role in the latter. The road, interspersed with stairs, meandered upwards, under a gallery, called portico (so luckily out of the sun!)

But I looked forward to the next day. Luckily I was able to go with the ordered bus, although it looks like in Italy they don't speak of an academic quarter of an hour, but more of an hour.

And then…. What would it be like in this post-covid period? Is there a distance? Not so much!. Remember, many friends haven't seen each other in 3 years. The hugs felt SO real, SO good. You felt that everyone had missed each other. Pure joy to see each other.

The entire event, including the exhibition itself, can be improved, everyone will agree on that. But all beginnings are difficult. Kudos to the organization though! It was a brave but inevitable decision to move to a bigger city. Fabriano, where the catering industry itself bears the consequences of the Covid period, can no longer handle the many countries, the many participants. A bit of a shame, because we have lost the cosiness of the event in Fabriano. Now it is a matter of somehow integrating that conviviality into the big city, but that will probably require some adjustment in the organization of the activities of the event.

Fabriano in Acquarello.

Upcoming exhibition / Komende tentoonstelling

(English)

The first weekend of April there will be another exhibition of an old (well, old? We're not old yet) school friend who designs jewelry in precious metals.

Each time she invites a few guest artists for such an exhibition.

I am very honored that I can be part of this exhibition for the second time, and this also at the request of customers and acquaintances of hers.

It is the ideal interplay between different forms of art. My own friends/customers/interested people who often already know and/or follow my work, also get to know other artists.

So ....

All are welcome to the exhibition "OMG" !

Let it hopefully be the OMG of 'I've never seen anything so beautiful'!
